Breakout strength
A 0 to 10 breakout score that reads 0 on every SPY bar with defaults, so it shows no breakouts.
BreakoutStrength scores a bar from 1 to 10 when its close clears the highest high of the last window bars. The score rises with how far the close clears that high and with the bar's volume against its average over the same window. The high it compares against already includes the current bar's own high, and a close cannot sit above its own high, so on normal bars the test never passes and the score stays 0. On the SPY one-minute sample from 2026-09-01 to 2026-10-01, all 20,160 bars scored 0.
How to read it
- The line sits in its own pane below the price, and with default settings it lies flat at 0 across the whole SPY sample.
- A flat 0 does not mean the market was quiet. The check cannot pass on a normal bar, so the line stays 0 whatever price does.
- Any value above 0 means a close above the window high, which a normal bar cannot produce. Check the high data for that bar before trusting the score.
What it outputs
- Breakout score
- Breakout score from 0 to 10 on bars where the close clears the window high, 0 otherwise. Stays 0 on every SPY bar with defaults.
Settings
- window
- Bars in the look-back for the resistance high and the average volume. A longer window can only raise the high, so the close has further to clear; a shorter one lowers it. Neither setting gives a score above 0 on normal bars.
Pitfalls
- All 20,160 SPY one-minute bars from 2026-09-01 to 2026-10-01 scored 0. No window value fixes this, because the high always includes the bar's own high.
- Scores take only 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 or 10, with no values between, so one step can be a large change in strength.
- Even with valid high data it would score only the first bar that crosses the window high, since it needs the previous close below that high.
