Explosive momentum trigger
Marks one-minute bars where a rise accelerates on a volume spike and a wider range, from the second bar on.
The trigger checks four things on every bar and fires only when all four pass on two bars in a row. It needs the one-bar return to accelerate sharply and turn positive, the summed bar returns over the last 3, 8 and 20 bars to be positive, volume to spike against the recent average, and the 14-bar average range to rise more than 10% from the previous bar. The 'explosive' name suggests one big candle, but the code is a stack of conditions, so a marker means a confirmed pickup in a rise rather than a single blowout.
How to read it
- Each marker sits on a candle where all four tests passed on that bar and on the bar before it.
- A run of qualifying bars marks from its second bar on, so one event can leave a short row of markers.
- Every marker sits in a rise: the bar returns summed over the last 3, 8 and 20 bars are all positive.
- Most of the chart stays unmarked, because a marker is a rare event rather than a regular rhythm.
What it outputs
- Explosive momentum trigger
- Reports True on the second and later bars of a run where all four tests pass, and nothing otherwise. Drawn as markers on the candles where it fires.
When it fires
When all four tests pass on two bars in a row. The marker sits on the second bar and on every later bar while the run continues, so one event can show several markers. A lone bar that passes all four stays silent.
Settings
- fast_window
- Bars in the short momentum sum and in the average the newest acceleration must beat. Raising it compares against a longer baseline; lowering it reacts to fewer bars. Above mid_window, the indicator never fires.
- mid_window
- Bars in the volume average and the medium momentum sum. Raising it smooths the volume baseline and slows the medium trend check; lowering it makes both react faster. Below fast_window, the indicator never fires.
- slow_window
- Bars in the long momentum sum and the warm-up before any marker. Raising it demands a longer rise and delays the first marker; lowering it starts sooner. Below mid_window, the medium sum quietly covers only slow_window bars.
- acceleration_factor
- How far the newest change in one-bar return must exceed the recent average of such changes, and it must also be positive. Raising it cuts markers; lowering it toward 1.0 lets smaller pickups through, and at 0 only a positive change is needed.
- volume_surge_threshold
- Volume the bar must reach against the average of the last mid_window bars, itself included. At 2.8 with the default 8 bars, the bar needs about 3.8 times the mean of the seven before it. Raising it cuts markers; 1.0 means only above that prior mean.
Pitfalls
- Rare at defaults: four firings in a month of SPY one-minute bars, about one every five sessions, so a quiet chart is normal.
- The 'true range' here is always high minus low, because the close sits inside each bar. Gaps from the previous close are never counted, so this is not standard ATR.
- A fast_window above mid_window never fires: the stored accelerations are capped at mid_window, so the check never has enough values. The parameter ranges allow this setting.
