Momentum explosion
Scores how hard price is accelerating upward over three look-back windows; mostly zero, never negative.
For each bar it takes the percent change in close over three windows, 3, 10 and 20 bars by default. The score is zero unless the short and middle changes are both up. Then it equals the short change, times 1.5 when short is above middle, and times 2 when short is above middle and middle is above long. Last, it is scaled by the bar's share volume divided by 100,000, capped at 1.5.
How to read it
- The line sits in its own pane below the price and is never below zero.
- Flat at zero means no upward acceleration on that bar. On SPY one-minute bars for September 2026 it was zero on at least half the bars.
- Only the top 5% of bars rose above 0.025 on that sample, and the highest was 0.888, so treat spikes as rare events, not a steady trend.
- Read a spike against the candles: it marks price rising faster over the last few bars than over the longer ones, not a guarantee of follow-through.
What it outputs
- Upward acceleration score
- Upward acceleration in percent points, zero unless both the short and middle changes are up. Scaled up when the windows are in order and by volume.
Settings
- window_short
- Bars back for the short change, which is the base value of the score. Lowering it reacts to the last few minutes and flips on and off more often; raising it follows a slower move and usually gives larger values.
- window_med
- Bars back for the middle change. Both short and middle must be up for any score, so a middle window close to the short one passes that test more often; raising it makes the score rarer.
- window_long
- Bars back for the long change, used only for the top tier: when short, middle and long are all up in order, the score is multiplied by 2 instead of 1.5. Raising it usually makes that tier rarer; lowering it makes it easier to reach.
Pitfalls
- Mostly flat at default settings: zero on at least half of SPY one-minute bars and above 0.025 on only the top 5%. The try presets use shorter windows to show more, but they were not measured on the chart.
- Upside only: both short and middle changes must be positive, so a sharp drop scores zero, the same as a quiet bar. It shows upward acceleration, not the direction of the next move.
- Volume scaling divides raw share volume by a fixed 100,000 and caps at 1.5, rather than comparing with recent volume. Thin bars shrink the score even when price rose fast.
