Volume momentum surge
Marks bars where volume more than doubles its recent average during a fast push up in price.
Over a 15-bar window, the indicator marks a bar only when three tests pass together. The close must be more than 1% above the close 14 bars earlier, the bar's volume must be more than twice the average of the 14 bars before it, and the last four bars must supply over 60% of that rise. The output is a yes-or-nothing signal with no line drawn.
How to read it
- Markers sit on the candles where all three tests passed. An empty stretch means no surge, not a bearish reading.
- A marker comes after price is already up at least 1% over the window, so it confirms a push in progress rather than calling a start.
- On the default window it did not fire at all in a month of SPY bars, so an empty chart is the normal result.
What it outputs
- Volume momentum surge
- Marks the bar where volume more than doubles its recent average during a rise of over 1% that is concentrated in the last four bars.
When it fires
On the bar where all three tests pass together: a rise of more than 1% over the window, volume over twice the prior average, and over 60% of that rise in the last four bars. It means heavy volume is backing a fast push that is already under way.
Settings
- window
- Bars in the lookback. Longer windows reach the 1% rise more easily and steady the volume average, but the last four bars must still supply 60% of that longer climb. At 5 the momentum test passes automatically. Below 5 the code can raise an error.
Pitfalls
- Zero markers in 20,160 one-minute SPY bars for September 2026 at the default window, so an empty chart is normal.
- Windows of 2 to 4 read a close five bars back that does not exist yet, so a surge raises an IndexError at those settings.
- It only checks for rises, so a sharp fall on heavy volume never marks and there is no bearish counterpart.
