Sum
The total of the last N values, this bar included; most useful on changes or 0/1 signals, not on prices.
Sum adds up the last N values of its input, the current bar included. On the default close it is about N times the price, so it moves like an average scaled up by N. It earns its place on inputs that change sign or count events, such as a price change or a signal, where it gives the net move or the number of events over the window.
How to read it
- The line sits in its own pane, since the sum of N closes is far above the candles.
- On a price change it reads as the net move over the window: above zero means up overall.
- On a 0/1 signal it reads as how many bars of the window the signal was on.
What it outputs
- Sum
- The total of the last N values of the input, this bar included.
Settings
- Window
- How many bars are added up. Longer windows total more bars and change more slowly; shorter ones react to the last few bars.
Pitfalls
- On prices the sum is just N times the average, so Avg reads more easily; use Sum when the input is a change or a count.
