Break retest continuation up event
Marks a resumed push up after price returns to the 100-bar high; silent at default settings.
This is a three-state machine on the highest close of the last 100 bars. Idle moves to BreakUp when the close is above that high scaled by (1 + band), and BreakUp moves to RetestUp once the close comes back within retest_band of the high. A marker fires on the bar a close is above the band-adjusted high while in RetestUp, and the pattern drops back to Idle when the close leaves the retest zone. At the default band of 0 the break test can never pass, because the high already includes the current close (0 of 20,061 sample bars closed above it), so the pattern never leaves Idle and the chart stays empty.
How to read it
- Markers sit on the candles where price, after breaking up and pulling back to the 100-bar high, closes above that high again.
- An empty chart at default settings is expected: with band at 0 the pattern cannot fire, so it is not a data fault.
- At band -0.1% the 20,160-bar SPY sample gave 389 markers; at -0.5% and lower it gave 112.
What it outputs
- Continuation up
- Marker on the bar where a close is above the band-adjusted 100-bar high while the pattern is in RetestUp. One marker per run of such bars.
When it fires
Fires on the bar a close is above the band-adjusted 100-bar high while the pattern is in RetestUp, meaning it already broke near the high and pulled back into the retest zone. Read it as price holding the high and pressing on, not a confirmed breakout above the prior range.
Settings
- band
- Break level as a fraction of the 100-bar high. At 0 or above no close can clear it, so no markers. Below 0 a close counts as a break when it sits that far under the high: -0.1% gave 389 markers, -0.5% and lower gave 112.
- retest_band
- Retest zone below the 100-bar high, as a fraction (0.003 = 0.3%). Only its lower edge matters, since a close never exceeds the high. A wider zone lets price pull back further and still count: at band -0.2%, 1% gave 221 markers, 0.3% gave 209.
- confirm_days
- Bars in a row the break-and-retest condition must hold before a marker appears. 1 marks the first bar. At band -0.2%, 3 gave 142 markers against 209 for 1, so the count falls as this rises.
Pitfalls
- At band 0 it never fires: the 100-bar high includes the current close, so no bar in the sample closed above it (0 of 20,061). The empty chart is a defect of the defaults, not a quiet market.
- A negative band turns it into a near-high pattern: the markers show price pressing the 100-bar high, not a move above the prior range.
- After a break it waits in BreakUp for a retest with no timeout and cannot register a new break meanwhile, so it can go quiet for long stretches.
