Jump detectors
Marks bars whose close sits a set percent above a recent low, or below a recent high.
Jump up compares the close with the lowest low of the last lookback_lows bars, the current bar included, and fires when the close sits more than up_threshold above it (default 1.5%). Jump down compares the close with the highest high of the last lookback_highs bars and fires when it sits more than |down_threshold| below. Despite the name, it does not detect gaps between bars; it measures distance from a recent extreme.
How to read it
- Both outputs are drawn as markers on the candles, with no pane, reference lines or zones.
- A Jump up marker is a bar that closed well above the lowest low of its recent window: a rally off a short-term floor.
- A Jump down marker is a bar that closed well below the highest high of its recent window: a drop off a short-term ceiling.
- On the default SPY one-minute sample neither output fired, so the chart shows no markers until a threshold is loosened.
What it outputs
- Jump up
- True on bars where the close is more than up_threshold above the lowest low of the last lookback_lows bars, the current bar included. Default 1.5%.
- Jump down
- True on bars where the close is more than |down_threshold| below the highest high of the last lookback_highs bars, the current bar included. Default 1.5%.
When it fires
Jump up fires on a bar whose close is more than up_threshold above the lowest low of the last lookback_lows bars. Jump down fires when the close is more than |down_threshold| below the highest high of the last lookback_highs bars. Neither fired on the default SPY sample.
Settings
- lookback_lows
- Bars back to take the lowest low, current bar included (default 5). Longer finds a lower floor, so the close must rally farther to fire jump up; shorter fires on smaller swings.
- lookback_highs
- Bars back to take the highest high, current bar included (default 5). Longer finds a higher ceiling, so the close must fall farther to fire jump down; shorter fires on smaller dips.
- up_threshold
- How far above the lowest low the close must sit to fire jump up (default 0.015, or 1.5%). Raising it makes jump up rarer; lowering it fires on smaller rallies. Below zero it fires on every bar once the window fills.
- down_threshold
- How far below the highest high the close must sit to fire jump down (default -0.015, or -1.5%). Moving it toward zero fires on smaller drops; more negative fires only on large ones. Above zero it fires on every bar once the window fills.
Pitfalls
- Zero events with defaults: neither output fired on 20,160 one-minute SPY bars from 2026-09-01 to 2026-10-01, so the indicator looks dead until a threshold is loosened.
- Thresholds are fractions, not percent: 0.015 is 1.5%. The slider range of -2.5 to 2.5 spans -250% to +250%.
- The name says jump, but this reads distance from a window extreme that includes the current bar. It does not catch gaps between bars. The try presets are not measured on the sample.
